And the Results Keep Coming In!
Well, I was surfing around the net last night and came up with this! I never realized, but all the great results that I had with KF Almaz+// has put me in 8th place in the Arabian Horse Association Horse of the Year Standings! Albeit lower than the top horses in points, this accomplishment includes EVERY horse in the United States and Canada in every possible class that has shown in the Arabian/Half Arabian Circuit. Pretty Cool eh?

Corey Knows Dressage is About Feel
When you first see this lanky 16 year old teenager, you really don't think that anything is unusual, except that he likes horses and dressage. Well, there is something a little more different. Corey is visually impaired.
Corey has already competed at the Niagara Dressage Shows, and has done extremely well at the basic levels, but he wanted to know more about this challenging sport.
Corey's thirst for knowledge brought him to Kirkridge. From the first day that I taught Corey, I had never realized how much Dressage was completely about feel. I'd always stated to my students that "dressage is about feeling the horse", and I'm sure that anyone who knows me, and has ridden with me, will attest to the fact that I have said this many times over. Corey just brought the whole concept "home" for me.
So, we work on rider position, and feeling the horses' balance. We've even started on lateral work. All this with a student that is totally intriqued with feeling the horse instead of seeing it.
Maverick, one of my schoolmasters has done a wonderful job with Corey. But on the other hand, I would be confident to let him ride my other horses. What sense (his eyesight) he has lost, he has gained in a lot of ways.

Dogs do Dressage....Don't they?
Here are a few pics that I took this morning of my Motley Crew.......Toonie the Cattle Dog, Sixxpac the Jack Russell Terrorist, and Sir Killian aka Killer, the Snoring Sheltie (he's almost 14 years old) in the back yard working on some new dressage class moves.........

What a Hectic Week!
So, I have missed putting some news on this blog for the past week. I wonder why? Well Wednesday I went to the Royal to watch the Grand Prix Class, and went to the Stephen Clarke discussion afterwards. Both very interesting to see.
The rest of the week was lessons, and re-doing the viewing room in my arena.
Sunday was kind of fun...Pat aka Caper and her son Corey had invited a few people from the Tackbox.com message board to come and meet us both. Elvis, Ladybug and JustTrottingAlong. Well, we had a blast! First seeing Corey ride, and then hanging out in the "new viewing room" sipping on coffee and hot chocolate, and nibbling on Cookies and Tim bits! All are welcome to stop by the farm and meet me!.
Above are pics of the viewing room, and the view into the arena. The one with the ribbons is Allies' wall of fame from the past 2 seasons.

Kirkridge Schoolmasters
Elaine offers lessons on her well trained schoolmasters ranging from Basic to Advanced levels. They have all had sucessful show careers, and now are used mostly for the school.
Maverick: Pictured on Right
An 11 year old Arab/Quarter Horse Cross. He was shown sucessfully to 4th Level.
Annaconda:Pictured on Left
KF Almaz+//'s mother. A Trakehner mare by Condus who was shown to Intermediare 1. Annie is a Piaffe/Passage lover!
Aruba: Annie's 1/2 sister. Great Second level horse. Wonderful lateral work!
Tango: 16.2 Hand Anglo/Arab. Basic dressage. Still competes on the Arab circuit in Dressage and Sport Horse
The New Dog!
Ok, so I'm an animal lover! It only took me a few seconds to see this adorable Jack Russell at the US National Championships, and want to bring her home.
Her name is Sixxpac. Her previous owner had passed away, and an old friend who I saw at the show had been looking after her, and had too many dogs of her own. So, I came home with this cutie! Toonie, my Cattle Dog actually fears this little ball of fur! They are great friends now, but it took a couple of weeks to establish the pecking order!
In Memorium: Sunar Born Lucky
On July 13th 2005, Kirkridge lost on of it's best friends. Lucky was 26 years old.
He was an Anglo Arabian born on Feb 13th 1979. He was called Lucky because he was a twin. His sibling died at birth.
He brought a lot of joy to many who had the opportunity to ride him. It did'nt matter what a person's age or ability was, he was the smartest horse I have ever owned. He'd do his careful walk on "eggshells" for the new riders, or tempi-changes for my more advanced riders. Lucky seemed to fit the bill for everyone!
Lucky did his share of winning championships, but his kindness, and willingness made him the best horse anyone could possibly have!
We will always miss you Lucky.

Lesson Program at Kirkridge
The Dressage Lesson program at Kirkridge is somewhat unique. All school horses are trained in Advanced Level Dressage: Prix St.George level and up. This provides riders with an opprtunity to ride well schooled and balanced horses therefore progressing at a faster rate. It gives riders a chance to ride from the basic levels and work steadily to the highest levels. As you are well aware of, a trained schoolmaster is worth $25,000 and up. This gives riders an opportunity to ride qualilty horses without the financial outlay. Kirkridge students are both recreational and competitve riders, and Elaine welcomes riders to learn in a relaxed atmosphere. KEC is a private teaching facility with an indoor arena and 3 large outdoor dressage rings. Lessons are scheduled so that Elaine works each student without the hustle and bustle of a large boarding stable or riding school.
About Elaine Ward-Turcotte
Elaine Ward began her riding career at age 3. First a successful Western youth rider, her interest in dressage developed after watching an international dressage event in Toronto in 1973.
Even though dressage was so new to Canada and lacked instructors,Elaine relied mostly on books and attending clinics with top European trainers such as Reiner Klimke and Jaap Pot. Dedication paid off in1976 with Elaine and her first Anglo-Arabian Mikelle becoming Ontario Junior Dressage Champions. She would repeat this feat in 1980 with Deja Vu a QH/TB mare.
During the early 80's Elaine competed on both Mikelle and Deja Vu in the US and Canada successfully through Intermediare 1.
She was a member of the Bronze Medal Team at the First North
American Continental Young Rider Championships in Chicago with Deja Vu and would win the Team Gold and Individual Bronze in 1983 at the ACYRDC's in Boston. Elaine began her teaching and training career at age 16, and it became a full time occupation in the mid eighties. Her students have competed successfully to Intermediare 1, and have earned many Championships in the Hunter/Jumper and even the Western Show rings. Elaine credits the success of her students with the way she teaches them; "don't rely on me being at your side all of the time to help you, learn to analyze the problems and correct them independently". She has an uncanny ability to determine whether the rider is communicating and balancing for the horse to understand the aids. Her concentration is on energy flow between the horse and rider.Elaine's first Grand Prix competition was in 1987 with Deja Vu and they were good enough to be long listed for the Canadian Team in 1988. Elaine and Deja Vu went on to win many classes and Championships before retiring her from the show ring in 1991 to become a schoolmaster. Elaine's next show mount would become the Trakehner mare Anaconda by Condus out of Arista. Born in 1984, her first year of major showing was in 1990 at Basic1 and 2, moving up to Medium 1 and 2 a year later. in 1991 Annie was the Ontario Medium Trillium Champion and has not looked back. Just like her father Condus and her relations Chrysos, Lavinia, Leonidas owned by Hilda Gurney of California this striking grey mare with 9's for her paces will soon be at Grand Prix. Anaconda has competed at Prix St. George and Intermediare 1. In 1997 her scores were in the 60's and they were the Toronto CADORA PSG/INT 1 Champion in June. Since then Annaconda has had a foal, Almaz and has returned to work as a schoolmaster.
In 1998 Elaine was the Canadian National Reserve Champion at Prix St.George with Sunar Born Lucky, an Anglo-Arabian that started his dressage career at age 12 back in 1992 and won 12 Regional Level Championships during his show career.
From 1999 to 2003, Elaine put her showing on hold and concentrated on her students, who won countless championships at the Trillium Dressage Shows, and Regional Arabian Championships in Ontario.
In 2004 Elaine began to campaign Annaconda's daughter KF Almaz+//. In her first season she amassed Regional and Local Championships at Training Level, and was the Eastern Canadian Arabian Horse Association's Dressage Horse of the Year.
2005 was a busy campaigning season with KF Almaz+//. See the above blog messages for her results.
Elaine is presently teaching riders at her farm Kirkridge Equestrian Centre on her advanced level school horses and has horses in training.
